Key Issues

CDC guidance on how COVID-19 is spread has changed several times in recent days. Scientists are concerned these changes are driven by politics.

Doctors worry that politics may have taken over at the CDC.

On September 18, the CDC updated its website to say that the COVID-19 virus probably can float in the air, like measles and other highly contagious viruses. This means that people can transmit the disease to each other easier than experts thought, especially indoors. Many scientists and the WHO gave statements about this months ago. Two days after the CDC post appeared it was removed. CDC says the information was published incorrectly.

Doctors and scientists worry that the post was removed because it goes against the White House message on COVID-19. Schools, cities, and states depend on CDC guidelines for how and when they should reopen.
