Is ICE canceling detainers?

ICE is issuing fewer requests to detain prisoners beyond their scheduled release.
Is ICE forcing localities to release prisoners? No. ICE has been issuing “immigration detainers” in recent years. These ask jails and prisons to keep undocumented immigrants beyond their planned release date so that ICE can take them into custody.
What changed? The current administration has canceled many of these detainer requests, intending them to be used only for those who are, “a threat to national security, border security and public safety.”
Was there a problem? Yes. There was a mix-up that let three sex offenders free, but they were quickly taken back into custody.
