Crossing the southern border - counting encounters

Question: What is driving the surge in illegal migration? Answer: Mostly hurricanes and the pandemic.
The rules haven't changed: We're still enforcing the border like always, and turning away thousands of people every week. Rumors and desperation: Migrants are fleeing COVID, hurricanes in Honduras, organized crime, and domestic violence. There are also rumors that the new administration has opened the border. That is not true.
What can be done? The US is increasing aid to countries of origin and working to make border operations more efficient. A bill before Congress has many provisions in it, including punishing companies who hire undocumented immigrants; speeding up the legal process for legal immigration; and using smart technology to help enforce the border.
